Palm Sunday Concert
April 9, 2017 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pmFree
Our Sanctuary Choir will join forces with the St. Andrew’s Choir and orchestra to present a very special concert on Palm Sunday afternoon. They will sing three major pieces: I Lift Up Mine Eyes by John Rutter, “Easter Hymn” from the opera Cavalleria Rusticana by Pietro Mascagni (composed for two choirs) and the much-loved Holy Week cantata The Seven Last Words, composed by Théodore Dubois.
The Rutter piece is lyrical, restrained and reflective. The Easter Hymn is a tour de force, needing large resources and a dramatic, operatic soprano—Gabriella Carrillo, our own soprano section leader. The Seven Last Words is a powerful cantata that relates Christ’s final words from the cross set to music. It includes some extraordinarily beautiful music—most especially the 4th word, “God, My Father,” sung by a baritone soloist. The cantata closes with the final benediction known and loved by many: “Christ, We Do All Adore Thee.”
